QUEENS, N.Y. - An NYPD officer died Wednesday evening after shooting himself in Queens, the ninth officer to take their own life in New York City this year, the police department confirmed.

Sources say Robert Echeverria, 56, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound aroun 6 p.m. inside his home on Francis Lewis Boulevard near 133rd Avenue in Laurelton.

The officer, who has been a member of the NYPD for 25 years, was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

He was not on duty at the time of his death.

This comes after a 35-year-old off-duty NYPD officer died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Yonkers on Tuesday.

The NYPD and city officials are urging police officers who are struggling to reach out for help, including by texting "BLUE" to 741741 or heading to the NYPD website.

Chief of Department Terence Monahan says the NYPD is considering bringing in outside resources like peer counselors to help troubled officers.
