Outraged residents make an appeal for peace, disgusted by the broad daylight shooting at the Mill Brook Houses that left a 7-year-old boy injured.

"Ya'll need to put the guns down," said Shaquon Simmons.  "Come on.  This is a community full of kids."

"This happens on a regular basis over here in the Bronx.  This is ridiculous" said Jesus Gonzalez.

Police say the young victim was walking with his grandmother near 600 East 137th Street when the shots rang out.

"A male Hispanic, wearing a dark colored hooded sweatshirt and dark colored sweat pants, discharged an unknown number of shots from what we believe to be a revolver towards the front entrance," said NYPD Assistant Chief Larry Nikunen.

Investigators say two people standing near that entrance were likely not hit.  But the little boy suffered a wound to the leg.  He was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

"It sounded like a shootout" said Gonzalez.  Jose Garcia added "it was a lot of gunfire.  It was very loud.''

Surveillance video shows the suspect running from the scene with a gun visible in his hand.

"This male then fled on foot, east bound on East 137th street, then northbound on Cypress Avenue" said Nikunen.

Police say he escaped using the 6 train at the nearby Cypress Avenue subway station.  Residents had no kind words for anyone who would open fire in an area where children often walk and play.

"Every time you turn around it's either a killing, a shooting, a stabbing" said Simmons. "We have too many kids around here. Either you're going to care for the kids or you're not going to care even for yourselves."

The little boy was rushed to Lincoln Hospital and is expected to recover.  Police are searching for the suspect as well as the two people they say were at the entrance of that building.
