NEW YORK - One person is dead and another in critical condition after their car hit an MTA flatbed truck in Manhattan early Tuesday morning.

Fire officials say a 25-year-old woman was driving a Honda Civic up 190th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue in Fort George around 1 a.m. when she allegedly hit and became pinned under the flatbed.

"He was coming fast up the hill, and by the time he hit the break, he had no time to hit the breaks. He went right under the truck, and by the time the ambulance came here  with the fire trucks and everything, they had to pull the car out to be able to take the people out of there. They had to cut the car up, almost like the top of the car and the whole right side of the car," said one witness at the scene.

A passenger in the car, identified as Eduardo Liranzo, 28, of the Bronx, was taken to the hospital where he died.

The driver remains in critical condition.

Police say the driver of the MTA truck was taken to the hospital for observation and is expected to be okay.

An investigation is ongoing.
