Ganiou Gandonou was an Uber driver who immigrated from the country of Benin in West Africa seeking a better future.

His life was cut short in his Toyota Camry on a Bronx street on March 2nd.

“An individual entered the cab taxi cab, the livery cab and stabbed him several times along the right side of his body our cab driver exited the vehicle, fell to the ground was helped by many individuals,” said Det. John Soto of the 45 Precinct Detective Squad.

Gandonou died a short time later at the hospital, leaving behind a wife and young son.

The unprovoked attack and the killer's getaway were caught on camera.

"The person that you see on video shows very erratic behavior while walking around. He was there for maybe 45 minutes to a half hour prior to the actual stabbing,” said Det. Dominic Robinson, of the Bronx Homicide Squad.

Detectives are hoping new surveillance video from the night of the attack will lead them to the suspect. There's a tell-tale clue about who the killer might be.

"What we feel stands out with this person is that he favors his right leg. He appears to have some sort of a limp when he walks,” Robinson said.

“This was a very vicious, savage attack on a young 27-year-old male. All he was doing was driving at this point.”

Driving a livery cab has long been a dangerous job. In the early 1990s, dozens of livery drivers were killed on the job in 1992. But as the city has gotten safer, so has driving a for-hire vehicle.

The New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers is pleading for justice.

"This is a man who dedicated his life to working 12 hours a day maybe more to make sure that he provided for his family. Whoever committed this crime is a savage, is an animal,” said Fernando Mateo, president of the NYSFTD.
