A water main break wreaked havoc on the Upper West Side today.

It happened Thursday morning on West 99th Street and Broadway.

Flooding in the streets quickly turned to ice due to the extreme cold.

Hundreds of residences and nearby businesses did not have water.

"Unfortunately the water has been turned off and people [in] really about a one block radius are affected," said City Council member Mark Levine. "So on this cold day where they might want to take a hot shower, they don't have that. It's one more hardship in a very difficult day for New York City."

The Sanitation Department still has spreaders out to minimize icing.

The cold weather on Thursday was likely responsible for the burst, which can be common during extreme temperatures.
