NEW YORK - Crews in Manhattan are working to fix a water main that broke early Tuesday morning, flooding several streets and halting subway service.

The Department of Environmental Protection says the 20-inch water main is located on Seventh Avenue between 14th and 15th streets in Chelsea.

Flooding conditions were first reported around 5:30 a.m.

L train service has resumed between Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn and Union Square in Manhattan.

Service between Union Square and Eighth Avenue remains impacted.

MTA officials hope to have service fully restored by the evening rush hour.

In the meantime, more buses have been put in service to help commuters get to their destinations.

The DEP says water and gas service in the vicinity was temporarily disrupted.

Residents living in the affected area should call 311 for the latest information.
