A woman is fighting for her life after being struck in the head with an ax in Brooklyn.

Now, sources tell NY1 her son has turned himself in.

This all happened around 5 p.m. in an apartment on West 33rd near Surf Avenue in Coney Island.

The 52-year-old woman was rushed to NYU Langone Hospital–Brooklyn in critical condition.

Police say one of her two sons was the one who initially called 911, but it’s unclear if that's the same son who turned himself in.

Neighbors say they're surprised to see something like this happen. "It's astonishing,” one neighbor said. “I wish her well and the family. You know the area, it seems pretty safe, but like anywhere, anything can happen, but it's a pretty good area. It's changing for the better."

At this time, we're unaware of any charges filed against the son.
