NEW YORK - A building fire in Manhattan killed one person and injured 11 others early Friday morning.

One of those injuries is said to be life-threatening.

The fire broke out shortly before 1 a.m. inside a walkup located at 945 St. Nicholas Avenue in Harlem.

The fire was under control in less than an hour.

Police say 41-year-old Natasha Paulema was pronounced dead at the scene.

Seven people were seriously hurt.

Three suffered minor injuries.

FDNY officials say there was no working smoke detector inside the apartment where the fire began.

The exact cause remains under investigation.
