NEW YORK - The iconic "Coffee Shop" in Union Square is set to close after 28 years in business.

The restaurant has been a popular destination for celebrities, and became a tourist destination after being featured HBO's hit show "Sex and the City."

It will reportedly close its doors in October due to high rents and rising minimum wage.

Customers who spoke with NY1 say they're sad to see it go.

"I'm a little surprised and upset because I love Coffee Shop. I mean where else am I going to go for a burger and a cocktail," said one customer.

"I get misty. I mean me and my family have been coming here since 1998," said another customer.

"I'm really disappointed. It's a fantastic place on Union Square.  It's a great place to be in the summer and it's going to be a shame to see it go," said a third customer.

Actress Laverne Cox says she is sad to see the shop close, posting on Twitter, "I spent 10 years of my life waiting tables at Coffee Shop in Union Square. It makes me so sad to read they are closing. Another NYC institution leaving us."
