Some families in the Bronx will soon be able to buy their first homes without breaking the bank.

Local lawmakers and Habitat for Humanity NYC officials breaking ground on the future site for the Sydney House in Williamsbridge.  The empty lot will be transofmed into a 56-Unit building housing one, two and three bedroom apartments.

It will be the largest multi-family building ever constructed by Habitat for Humanity.   It’s all part of the City’s Open Door initiative, which aims to build affordable housing for first time homeowners.  Karen Haycox, CEO for Habitat for Humanity NYC says "everyone in our city, and yes in our world, deserves a simple, safe, decent affordable home, no matter their income."

Construction is expected to take anywhere from 18 to 24 months.  No word yet on when people can start applying for the apartments.
