A new art exhibit is capturing the spirit of protest on Staten Island.

#ArtoftheProtest made its debut at the Canvas Institute of Arts, Culture, and Civic Engagement this weekend.

The interactive exhibit takes on community movements that focus on helping immigrants, helping victims of Hurricane Sandy, and fighting racism.

The collection features signs that were used during protests and pieces by community artists and activists.

"Everyday people make beautiful art. And that's what we wanted to capture here. The art that the person on the street made to express their feelings," said organizer, Teresa Caliari.

The Art of the Protest will be on display until February 23rd. Admission is free and it's open to the public. CANVAS is open Wednesday through Saturday from 11AM to 4PM.
