Summer is more than a month away, but Governors Island is already open for the season.

The island usually opens on Memorial day, but not this year.

It began welcoming visitors last Monday.

The early opening allows for the public to explore and enjoy the park during the spring, including a slate of new attractions.

"Yeah, you're going to be able to zipline a 300 foot long zipline with the Statue of Liberty in the background, we have a 24 foot climbing wall. We're going to have a new maze, so recreation is a big part of what we do too. To free kayaking at the downtown boat dock, to the sports fields that we have," said The Trust for Governors Island President Michael Samuelian.

The island will be open everyday through October 1.
