Some Queens teens said yes to their prom dress at an event on Saturday.  NY1's Shannan Ferry was there and explains why their shopping spree was so special.

A free one-stop prom shop in Jamaica had everything from glamorous gowns to high heels for young ladies invited to attend an event in Jamaica on Saturday.

"Not all girls are fortunate enough to have something like this, so I think it's amazing, and in this dress I feel beautiful," said Ashley Roberts, who was among the students at the giveaway.

Organizer Felisa Sternbach said the idea for the event came to her while doing laundry for her two daughters.

"I would see all their old prom dresses their sweet sixteen dresses, and it made me crazy, these dresses have been worn once and they're never gonna be worn again," said Sternbach.

So, she started collecting donations and eventually teamed up with The Greater Jamaica Development Corporation.

As a result, more than 300 gently used gowns were up for grabs in all shapes and sizes at the Harvest Room on 160th Street.

Volunteers were on hand to help girls find their perfect match.

The ladies also had accessories and handbags to choose from.

"It helps so many girls, and the fact that it's free makes my life so much easier," said Yanique Renwick, another attende.

One student even donated a gown she got at last years giveaway.

"Why not give it to someone else that really needs it, and wants it, and hey feels pretty in it ya know," said Lorenne Huamann.

Organizers told NY1 that they hoped the event would inspire others to give back.
