NEW YORK - You may only have a few more years to use your MetroCard.

The MTA says it anticipates the MetroCard will be phased out by the year 2022.

It's expected to be replaced by a tap card that could be linked to customers' smartphones, and would be compatible with Metro-North and the Long Island Railroad.

Tap technology is already used on PATH trains, as well as in the Washington Metro and London Underground.

MetroCards were first introduced to the transit system in 1993.
