A historic national ship sails home into Lower Manhattan.

The Wavertree arrived at the South Street Seaport Saturday after undergoing 16 months of repairs.

Built in Southampton, England in 1865, the 270-foot cargo ship circled the earth four times.

After 35 years of sailing and four trips around the world, the Wavetree's career as a cargo ship came to an end after getting caught in a storm in South Africa.

The Wavertree was eventually shipped back to be docked at the Seaport in the 1960s and is the world's only remaining wrought-iron ship.

The city's Department of Design and Construction spent almost $13 million to restore the ship to its original condition.

It will remain on display at the South Street Seaport Museum.
