Volunteers of America is sorting out donations for its annual Operation Backpack Campaign.

Backpacks will be filled with donated school supplies that have been collected over the last several weeks.

The bookbags will then be distributed to homeless children living across the five boroughs.

Organizers are hoping to break a record of 20,000 book bags, but are still in need of specific items.

"We really want to put on these children's backs what we would put on our own children's backs and this year we don't have really good quality empty high school backpacks and people have been brining some in, nice one and I'm asking them where are you getting them and I think the sales are starting to be out there so go to your stores, go to your local stores you know get some high school backpacks, send them to us," said Volunteers of America-Greater New York VP Rachel Weinstein.
