New Yorkers know commuting in the city can be a drag and now there's research to prove it.

A study from the Center for an Urban Future shows New Yorkers in a majority of the city's neighborhoods have an average commute of 40 minutes or more.

Compare that to the national average of just 26 minutes.

Fifty-nine percent of New Yorkers use mass transit to get to work.

Commutes from neighborhoods like the Rockaways and Bayside in Queens can last longer than 50 minutes.

On Manhattan's East Side, nearly 40 percent of commuters bike or walk.

All five boroughs have shown an increase in commuters working within their own borough since 2000, while just under four percent work from home.
