On Wellness Monday, we talk a lot about physical and mental health. But a missing piece of your annual check up also includes sexual health. Dr. Elizabeth Comen joined "News All Day" to talk more about this important topic.

Dr. Comen is an oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and it was through that work that she discovered people aren’t always taking care of this part of themselves.

With regard to men, missing from the conversation is enough information about cancer, including testicular and prostate cancer. Comen says that a diagnosis can affect a person’s self-esteem or sense of self, which can impact your sexual health.

For women, Comen says there has never been a time in history where we have valued women’s sexual health and pleasure in the same way that we value men’s. Women struggle to find places to talk about their needs, whether that’s reproductive choices, pleasure, or sexual education.

Seniors are also interested in this topic. Comen says their sexual health can be an “important, critical quality of life measure for them.”

The same can be said for those with disabilities. Comen says it’s important to recognize there are different ways to engage in our bodies and find pleasure and that we need to make sure that’s accessible to all patients.

Comen highly recommends speaking with your doctor about any questions or concerns. Don’t be afraid to speak up and be open so you can get the resources you need.
