Out with the old, in with the new. The new year can bring a desire to make some life changes, including better organizing your belongings.

Joanna Brumberger, a professional organizer and owner of An Edited Space, joined NY1 to give tips on how to make some improvements to your space, which is something she believes can benefit many areas of life.

Brumberger recommends putting systems in place to make your day smoother and easier.

Step one is to declutter — which is figuring out what you do and don’t need anymore, she said.

According to Brumberger, the next step is finding storage bins that fit the space you have to categorize your items and store the similar items together.

For longer term organization, Brumberger recommends consistently maintaining the organization you created for yourself.

The most important tool she recommends is a label maker.
