New York Times Science and Health Reporter Donald McNeil says he is cautiously optimistic that there will be a light at the end of the tunnel when it comes to the coronavirus.

Last week he wrote the article, “A Dose of Optimism, as the Pandemic Rages On,” citing medical experts saying the pandemic could be largely over as early as the middle of next year.

He says this could be the case should people continue to follow guidelines this winter and should a vaccine exist.

Even though many have doubts about the first distributions of the vaccine, McNeil says more people are likely to take it as they see their neighbors taking it with no bad outcomes.

"Here people say, 'hey I can either take this vaccine which I'm a little scared of or I can homeschool my kids ‘til they're finished with high school or I'll never go to a movie or a restaurant or out to an airplane again.’ I think a lot of people take chances on vaccines,” McNeil said on "Mornings On 1."

As for a resurgence in New York City, McNeil says the state is struggling to get a handle on the virus hot spots that emerged recently.

He says he is certain it won't be citywide and hopes the city can jump on outbreaks and clusters quickly.
