Alternate Side Parking rules are back into effect today, but in a different way for the rest of the summer.

Drivers will only have to move their cars once per week. Streets that have multiple alternate side days will be cleaned only on the last day posted on the sign, says City Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia.

Garcia says there’s a possibility this concept could result in lasting changes as the city reevaluates its process.

“I think that we are learning a lot coming out of this pandemic about what works and what doesn’t work. And maybe there are changes we can make going forward to make sure the city stays clean. But obviously we don’t want to ask residents to move their cars more than they need to, so we’re trying to really dial in on what works,” she said.
