NEW YORK - There's a new transit chief in town.

The MTA named Sarah Feinberg as interim president of New York City Transit on Tuesday, replacing Andy Byford who officially stepped down last week.

She's currently the MTA Transit Committee chair and a former Federal Railroad Administrator under President Barack Obama.

When she moves into the new role on March 9, Feinberg will oversee operations for subways, buses, and a massive workforce.

"Organizations need different leaders at different moments, and there are 50,000 people who work at New York City Transit -- men and women who show up every morning and who execute so that eight million people get to school, get to work, get home safely, and I'm thrilled to jump in and work with them," Feinberg said.

The MTA will conduct a search for a permanent replacement.
