After several recent deaths of detainees, including 27-year-old Layleen Polanco, who was found dead in her cell on Rikers Island, Errol Louis discusses the conditions inside the city's jail system, with Insha Rahman of the Vera Institute of Justice and Stanley Richards of the Fortune Society and the Board of Correction.

In a statement sent to NY1, Department of Correction Commissioner Cynthia Brann said, "There were two tragic deaths in our custody and investigations into both of them are ongoing. The safety and wellbeing of our officers and people in custody is our top priority. Under this administration we've implemented historic initiatives intended to make our jails safer, more accessible to friends and family and more equitable and we're committed to continue creating a safer jail system."
