NEW YORK - Democratic state lawmakers are pushing a bill to allow undocumented immigrants to get driver licenses.

More than 10 other states already have similar laws.

Supporters say it would make roads safer and raise millions in revenue.

In 2007, then-governor Eliot Spitzer tried to make it happen but he faced sharp opposition from Republicans.

Spitzer was a guest on Wednesday night's "Inside City Hall".

He said he's hopeful the bill can pass now that Democrats control both houses in Albany.

"It's better to have people whom we know, where there are names, we can ask them what their real background is, rather than have people live in the shadows. I'm for it because I happen to think it's a matter of humanity. Folks who are here, in the economy, paying taxes every day at their work - let's let folks work," Spitzer said.

There are six weeks left in the legislative session in Albany.
