On January 1, a bill took effect in New York State drastically changing many aspects of how we deal with the criminal justice system. One big focal point: cash bail, which will no longer be imposed for most misdemeanor or nonviolent felony charges.

Althea Hogan was arrested on a weapons possession charge and give $1,000 bail, which she could not meet. She spent months behind bars before her case was adjudicated. She joins In Focus to tell her story.

Stanley Richards, Executive Director of The Fortune Society, has fought for bail reform for years. He talks about why this cash bail reform was so urgent, how the past system helped decimate communities of color, and how, he believes, time will show this reform was the right thing to do.
