There are more than 1,000 Hate Groups active across the U.S., and hate crimes are on the rise. Here in New York City, the story is much the same. While statistics show most crime dropping, the exception is hate crimes. And more than half of them are anti-Semitic hate crimes. As the leader of an LGBTQ synagogue, Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum is battling hate on two fronts. As the Executive Director of the Muslim Community Network NY, Aniqa Nawabi sees the hate directed towards the Muslim community every day. Both of these women work not only to protect their own communities from what seems to be an unprecedented level of vitriol, but to find solutions that will bring New Yorkers together. They talk about what they think is causing this absence of civil discourse, and how educating the public and reaching out to everyone might make all of us safer.
