Early on, the NYPD went to great lengths to have the parade cancelled, although it never was. Violence has marred J'Ouvert, which leads up the parade, in recent years. The fatal shooting of Carey Gabay, a former aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, in 2015 shined a spotlight on security questions. Advocates talk about what steps have been taken both by police and parade organizers to keep everyone safe without taking away from the joy of the Carnival.
