The U.S. Food and Drug Administration declared a nationwide Adderall shortage in the last few weeks.

For many New Yorkers, they’ve felt the squeeze which has been blamed on manufacturing delays for several months.

“There were many times where I wanted to dissolve into a pool on the ground because it was like, ‘I don’t know what to do now. I’ve called every Walgreens in Manhattan and no one can help me,’” said Dana Daniels.

Daniels struggles to focus and is clinically diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder for 12 years.

The drug Adderall, has helped her combat symptoms.

Now, many of her days are consumed by searching for a pharmacy that has the medication in stock.

“Tenty-six in total for September,” Daniels said.

Daniels said she’s even gone on-line to ask for guidance, and that has only helped a little.

“You kind of feel by yourself. I mean, the internet was the only place that actually gave me helpful suggestions,” Daniels said.

Dozens of others who are experiencing the same hardship responded to her post on the discussion website Reddit where they solicit help and suggest places that might have the medication.

Professor of Psychiatry Dr. Lenard Adler said ADHD is the second most common neuro-psychiatric disorder in adults.

Adler said ADHD occurs in more than four percent of the country’s adults, and not treating ADHD has significant ramifications including being more likely to change jobs, get separated and divorced, and even have vehicle accidents.

“Once you run out, your symptoms start to return and they return over a period of a week or two. So, if you have a gap in your treatment you’re likely to have a return in your symptoms,” Adler said.

Pharmaceutical companies aren’t expected to recover from the manufacturing delays until March.
