Seventeen students were treated for minor injuries after an eight-year-old classmate used pepper spray at their Brooklyn school.

Police say it happened after an eight-year-old brought pepper spray to PS 184 in Brownsville, and sprayed it during an assembly in the auditorium. Seventeen students were taken to the hospital.

Police say the child will not be arrested, and the Department of Education will decide on disciplinary charges against the child.

The DOE released a statement about the incident, saying:

"EMS immediately responded to an incident at PS 184 in Brooklyn. Students and staff are safe, and out of an abundance of caution individuals were transported to the hospital for observation."
