NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea says violence is creeping up citywide, and it’s a real concern.

More people are on edge due to the coronavirus pandemic, which comes at a time when the criminal justice system is not fully up and operating.

Shea says no grand jury has been sitting, and for a while criminal justice systems have been navigating how to handle certain situations. He does point out that has been improving with time and resources.

“What we need is—we need that whole criminal justice system to get back online,” Shea said in an interview with NY1.

Shea also commented on what’s ahead for summer and said operations ran smoothly over Memorial Day weekend, when beaches and state parks reopened with limitations.

“It went pretty quiet as expected. I think it was a nice dry run for everyone,” said Shea.
