New Yorkers have heard the message from city and state officials, from loved ones, and now, the hip hop industry is telling everyone too—wash your hands.

A new public service announcement written by Doug E. Fresh helps emphasize the importance of handwashing in fighting COVID-19, and as a general practice going forward.

The PSA was an effort made possible through the Harlem rapper’s Hip Hop Public Health organization, which he co-founded with Dr. Olajide Williams, head of neurology at NY Presbyterian/Columbia.

The announcement featured hip hop icons from across the industry, which Doug E. Fresh said was particularly important as a way to reach black and Hispanic audiences, as their communities have become some of the hardest hit in New York.

Williams helped highlight the need for proper hygienic practices and social distancing to slow the spread of COVID-19.

“It’s critically important for us to put the message out that really emphasizes the things that people can do to mitigate the spread of the virus and protect their loved ones--and washing your hands is at the top of that list, as well as social distancing,” says Williams.
