President Donald Trump has made only one trip back to his hometown since his inauguration. The latest NY1/Baruch College City Poll numbers may help explain his extended absence. NY1's Grace Rauh filed the following report.

President Donald Trump lost New York City decisively last fall, and he has not made up much ground with New Yorkers.

64 percent of city residents disapprove of the job Trump is doing in Washington. Only 26 percent say they approve of his presidential performance.

"I've accomplished a tremendous amount in a very short time as president."

Only Republicans in the city say he is doing a good job.

"He's extremely unpopular," said Doug Muzzio of Baruch College. "They are terrified of Donald Trump, and they don't like him. New Yorkers are firm in their opposition to Donald Trump."

Many New Yorkers also say they feel less safe with Trump as the nation's president. 45 percent say they think a terror attack is more likely under Trump. 30 percent say it is just as likely and 15 percent say less likely.

"He's not making America safe again, or at least not New York safe again," Muzzio said.

City residents also want to see Trump's tax returns, which he has refused to release. Nearly three-quarters of New Yorkers say all public officials have an obligation to release their taxes. Just 21 percent say no.

As for addressing immigrants living here illegally, New Yorkers are siding with Mayor Bill de Blasio over Trump. The city does not cooperate with federal immigration officials seeking to deport undocumented immigrants, except when certain serious crimes have been committed.

65 percent of New Yorkers say they support the mayor's approach to immigration, even if it ends up costing the city federal dollars. 25 percent oppose it. Again, Republican New Yorkers are the only group that opposes the mayor's policy.

The Trump administration has threatened to withhold federal money from New York and other so-called sanctuary cities if they do not comply with federal immigration rules. But last month, a federal judge blocked the order.
