Activists gathered on the steps of City Hall on Monday for the 10th annual National Latino AIDS Awareness Day.

The event was aimed at promoting education and HIV testing within the Latino community, as the Centers for Disease Control says Latinos are disproportionately affected by the epidemic nationwide.

Dayana Mendoza, the 2008 Miss Universe winner, was on hand to demonstrate a new over-the-counter HIV rapid-test.

In the city, 94,000 people are known to be living with HIV or AIDS and 28 percent of them are Latino.
