1639...A Danish farmer, Jonas Bronk, becomes the first European settler in the area now named for his family – the Bronx.


1910...Mayor William J. Gaynor is shot in the throat by a laid-off city worker. The mayor recovers, but the bullet is never removed.


1978...A strike by pressmen shuts down the city's three major daily newspapers. A settlement is reached after an 88-day walkout.


1995..."Deadheads" across the city hold a series of tributes to mourn the passing of Grateful Dead leader Jerry Garcia after the 1960s counterculture icon dies of a heart attack at 53.
