1926...Gertrude Ederle of Manhattan's Upper West Side becomes the first woman to swim the English Channel, breaking the record set by a male swimmer three years earlier. New Yorkers later welcome her home with a tickertape parade and a ceremony at City Hall.
1971...The U.S. Senate approves creation of the 26,000-acre Gateway National Recreation Area in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island.
