1936...Just weeks after the Triborough Bridge opens, ferry service between Manhattan and Astoria, Queens ends.
1962...Sylvia Woods opens "Sylvia's," a soul food restaurant in Harlem. The original eatery has just four booths and a counter for ten, but later expands to several times its original size en route to becoming a Harlem institution.
1981...The rock music video channel MTV hits the airwaves from studios in Manhattan.
Today's New Yorker birthdays include former Senator Alfonse D'Amato, born in Brooklyn in 1937.
