1900...Bids go out for the construction of an underground railroad line running from City Hall to the Bronx. The city's first subway opens four years later.


1967...Long-time Harlem Congressman Adam Clayton Powell is barred from taking his seat in the House of Representatives pending an investigation into his misuse of funds. Powell returns to the House two years later after the the Supreme Court declares his exclusion unconstitutional, but he is defeated at the polls the following year.
