1964...The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge opens as the nation's longest suspension bridge, allowing drivers to travel between Brooklyn and Staten Island for a 50-cent toll. The new span marks the end of New York's golden age of bridge-building, and helps turn sleepy Staten Island into a bustling borough.
