The rate of children with autism is much higher than previously thought, according to a new government study.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that 2 percent of all children are afflicted with the developmental disorder.
The findings are based on interviews with more than 95,000 parents conducted in 2011 and 2012.
An earlier survey pegged the number of children with autism at one in 88. That was based on medical and school records.
Health officials said the new number doesn't necessarily mean more children have autism.
They said it could be attributed to doctors diagnosing it more often and including children with milder forms of autism.
