Residents at a Queens housing project hit hard by Hurricane Sandy were stuck in a smelly situation until NY1 For You stepped in to help. NY1's Susan Jhun filed the following NY1 For You report.

Astoria Houses in Queens has a situation that stinks, according to public housing tenant Jacqueline Adams. She has left her garbage in the hallway ever since the building's trash compactor broke during flooding from Hurricane Sandy.

"We have to tolerate garbage bags full to capacity. Every morning, the smell, rodents running around up and down the hallway," Adams says. "It's disgusting."

Tenants at Astoria Houses say the bags placed in front of the garbage chutes on each floor pile up every day, creating an unsanitary mess.

Outside the building, a NY1 crew says that more than a dozen bags full of trash sat in the hallways for 24 hours.

"Management tells me nothing. They give me the run around," Adams says.

NY1 called NYCHA and a spokeswoman looked into the case. The next day, the trash compactor was fixed.

Tenants were relieved to finally dispose of the situation.
