City DOE Tries To Salvage State School Aid With Potential Plan For Teacher Evaluations

The city says it plans to spend millions to train educators on a new teacher evaluation system, but there is no teacher evaluation system in the city yet.

The city Department of Education sent a letter to the state Department of Education, outlining the $22 million plan that would start now and go through September.

The plan is a response to State Education Commissioner John King's threat last month to pull hundreds of millions of dollars in funding if the city did not submit a plan for an evaluation system by February 15.

The plan would include an informational website, in-person and online training and year-round help desks.

State officials said Monday they were reviewing the documents, but it was unclear if they would accept the plan without a deal on evaluations between the city and the teachers' union.
