New York City Police Department officials revealed Monday that their force conducted nearly 686,000 stop-and-frisks in 2011.

A police spokesman said that works out to less than one stop per officer per week.

The stop-and-frisk policy has been a source of controversy for years, with critics saying they unfairly target blacks and Hispanics.

Several cases challenging the practice are making their way through the courts.

The city is appealing one case that struck down a stop-and-frisk program at private buildings in the Bronx.
