Ashley And Amanda Lau: Twin Athletes Set Individual Goals

The latest NY1 Scholar Athletes are twin sisters who are never far apart, both in the water and on the ice. NY1's Anthony Pascale filed the following report.

Twin sisters Ashley and Amanda Lau have been swimming and ice-skating alongside each other for as long as they can remember. Never far apart, the two recently co-captained the Wagner High School girls swim team.

"It was different because we’re casual with one another. When we were co-captaining, it was kind of like a business aspect for me. It was easy that it was someone I knew beforehand," says Ashley.

"I didn’t look at her as a sister. We found out that because since we’re like business partners like she said, there were times where we disagreed," says Amanda.

Amanda and Ashley were born prematurely and were introduced to the water at age two to help them grow stronger. By the time they were five, they were swimming competitively. Those at the school who work with the twins say they balance each other.

"I have to talk about them at the same because I can’t mention one without the other. Ashley and Amanda are a tandem always and they are both very studious, they’re extremely studious, very dedicated," says assistant principal of social studies Christina Goffredo.

"If they don’t achieve something, they figure out a way to make it more better for themselves where they could get to the point to point where they will succeed. I’ve seen that in swimming and in school," says swim coach April Consolmagno.

Amanda and Ashley picked up ice skating for fun when they were five and are now members of the U.S. Figure Skating Association. They are both gold medalists in the Senior Moves in the Field category.

"I remember that when my sister got on, she loves it but I hated it. And then I kind of went with her because we’re always together and then I started liking it as I got older," recalls Amanda.

Both are "A" students and members of the school's Scholar's Academy. Together, they raised $1,800 for victims of the 2008 earthquake in China.

"To show that knowledge and to show that determination at such a young age is something that’s rarely seen now and should be seen more and more. They both have proven again that they are capable of handling anything that’s been set in front of them," says AP biology teacher Ryan Contino.

Both girls are excited to start college in the fall, but are not sure if they will be end up at the same university. Amanda plans on majoring in biomedical engineering in college while Ashley is interested in economics, East Asian Studies, or computer science.

"I cherish my moments with her now, especially because we’re going off to college soon. I’m definitely going to miss her a lot," says Ashley.

So, for their teamwork and excellence in sports, Ashley and Amanda Lau are the latest NY1 Scholar Athletes of the Week.
