Students returned to city schools Wednesday morning without any problems from a threatened strike from bus drivers.
The Department of Education has been seeking bids on new contracts for about one-sixth of its bus routes in an effort to cut spending, a move that could cost some drivers their jobs.
Local 1181, a union representing bus drivers, responded by threatening to strike.
But as classes resumed, no strike materialized.
The union is not officially commenting on the status of any potential work stoppage.
About 150,000 kids rely on buses to get to school in the city.
