Parents gathered in Midtown on Sunday to ask the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York to not close St. Jerome School in the Bronx in June.

Parents, students and community leaders gathered near St. Patrick's Cathedral to protest what they called an unfair decision by the archdiocese to place the Mott Haven school "at risk" of closure.

"It's unjust that our school, which supports our community and has been a cornerstone for many decades and generations, is closed," said a protester.

"The principal, he tries his best to not close the school down, and seeing that he trying his best and for him to fail is kind of disappointing," said another.

"If they realistically desired to have these schools continue to educate these children then they would give them a proper amount of time, proper training to the parents, proper conversations with their administrators to be able to secure enough funds for the upcoming year," said a third.

The school, which opened in 1871, is expected to close in June as part of a restructuring effort.

The final decision will be made by the archdiocese next month.
