NYC Tourism Group Offers Cheaper Rates During Slow Winter Season

The city's tourism board is trying to beef up business during the normally slow winter months with some great deals. NY1's Valarie D'Elia filed the following report.

Wonder about the cheapest time to enjoy New York? You're looking at it! The start of the New Year might be the most affordable time to see New York City like a tourist.

NYC & Co, New York’s official tourism and marketing arm, is announcing the return of some popular cost-saving programs in January and February. The "Sample NYC Winter Sale" is designed to encourage travel when visitor numbers traditionally drop by more than a million after the holidays.

Getting into a New York City restaurant is not only easier in the winter lull but cheaper, with New York Restaurant Week providing three-course prix-fixe meals from January 14-February 8.

Combine dinner with a Broadway show, as Broadway Week returns for a fifth year with two-for-one tickets from January 22-February 7. Get two-fers on Off-Broadway productions as well from January 28-February 10. View details at nycgo.com/wintersale.

With hotel rates averaging $216 during this slow period, about a quarter lower than the average for the rest of the year, now's the time to treat your tribe to a staycation or mini-vacation.

As part of NYC & Co's "Muppet Family Fun Hotel" promotion, more than 30 New York City hotels will provide either a free room upgrade, complimentary breakfast for kids under 12 or both, along with a Muppets gift bag.

Prefer to slither under sheets with a higher thread count? Twelve luxury hotels, all part of The Signature Collection, are participating in a "Third Night Free" program. Another cushy benny of booking one of these fancy hotels is VIP treatment at Saks Fifth Avenue, with free shipping of purchases to the hotel or back home. More information is available at nycgo.com/thirdnight.
