School days are about to get a lot longer for some students in New York State, as five states are participating in a three-year pilot program starting next fall to expand the school year by 300 hours.
The program will be put in place at 40 schools starting next fall, but none of them are in the city.
Teachers, parents and administrators will decide how to expand classroom time, by either making days longer, adding days to the school year, or a combination of both.
The program is designed to give more instruction time for critical subjects like science and math while still allowing time for other subjects like art and music.
