The man known around the world as "J.R. Ewing" has died.

"Dallas" star Larry Hagman passed away Friday following complications from cancer.

His first big role was on the sitcom "I Dream of Jeannie" about two decades earlier, but it was his portrayal of the iconic, ruthless Texas oil baron J.R. Ewing on "Dallas" that made him a household name.

Hagman was nominated for two Emmy awards for his portrayal of Ewing.

The legendary 1980 episode "Who shot J.R.?" remains one of the most widely watched events in TV history.
