All city public and charter students are expected to return to class on Monday, but Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott announced Thursday that eight of those schools are still expected to be holding evacuees who left low-lying areas for Sandy.

These eight will be Brooklyn Tech High School, FDR High School and John Jay High School in Brooklyn, Graphic Arts High School and George Washington High School in Manhattan, Hillcrest High School in Queens and Susan Wagner High School and Tottenville High School in Staten Island.

Walcott also said 44 school buildings housing 79 schools received major storm damage, and Education Department officials are trying to find where to relocate these schools' students.

Among the most heavily damaged schools are P.S. 253, I.S. 289 Mark Twain School and John Dewey High School in Gravesend, Brooklyn; P.S. 195 in Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn and Beach Channel High School in Rockaway Park, Queens.

John Dewey High had a fire Tuesday morning and Beach Channel High had a major oil spill, according to Walcott.

All Department of Education teachers and administrators were originally told to report to work on Friday, Walcott said that faculty of 283 schools in 174 school buildings will have to meet in alternate locations.

Of the 174 buildings not fit to open for Friday, 130 did not have electricity. DOE officials hoped to restore power by Friday.

The chancellor also said that 96 percent of the school bus fleet can run, despite reports that a larger percentage of the fleet was disabled by the storm.

Meanwhile, CUNY schools will resume classes on Friday.

Pace's Downtown Manhattan campus will be closed through Sunday, and officials will decision on Friday whether to be open next week.

New York University is resuming a normal class schedule on Monday.

All New Visions Charter High Schools are closed Thursday and Friday.

Helene Fuld College of Nursing in Manhattan is closed Thursday and Friday.

The Collegiate School and the Invictus Prep Charter School will also be closed Thursday and Friday.
