Last month, concerned residents in Jamaica, Queens contacted NY1 For You about a filthy, vacant property bringing down the neighborhood. Now, the city has agreed to clean it up. NY1's Susan Jhun filed the following report.

A massive mess has sat on a vacant residential lot in Jamaica, Queens for four years now. NY1 told viewers about the virtual junkyard last month when residents complained about its negative effect on the neighborhood.

"It's bad, it's nasty," said one neighbor. "It attracts wildlife, raccoons."

"You see rodents running around out there and people coming in, throwing trash up in there," said another neighbor.

Neighbors said owners of the property knocked down a private house and left the lot vacant.

"Nobody's upkeeping it, so whatever people are coming and they're putting garbage there because it's a lot that is obviously neglected," said one neighbor.

Unable to reach the owner of the property, residents turned to the city for help.

"Several neighbors have lodged complaints but to no avail," said neighbor Crystal Bonds. "The only thing we received is something attaching myself and my husband to the property, saying that we have to clean up the vacant lot, otherwise we'll be fined."

The letter is bizarre since Bonds doesn't own the lot and is the one who's been begging to have it cleaned up.

NY1 called the Department of Health and the Sanitation Department. After some back and forth, a Sanitation spokesman admitted there was a mix up and sent a letter of apology to Bonds, stating she received the warning in error.

However, just weeks later, Bonds received a summons. NY1 called Sanitation again and the spokesman said Bonds can ignore the summons, which was also sent in error. This time, he told NY1 the property has been placed on the Cleaning Unit’s hit list and is scheduled to be cleaned up.

It's a relief to residents, who hope the city makes good on its promise.
